The Customer
Umicore is a world leader in materials technology and metal recycling, headquartered in Belgium. At their Hoboken plant, they recycle 17 different precious metals from laptops, mobile phones and car catalytic converters, among others. The company has 12,000 employees worldwide and four sites in Belgium.
The Challenge
Umicore needed kettles for a smelting process where lead is melted by heating from below. The structures had to be extremely heavy, heat-resistant and equipped with a working platform.
The solution
SMO produced two melting kettles including working platform. Fire is stoked in the lower kettles. On the platform above it, a kettles with lead is placed, which melts by heat from below. The structures have a height of 3.8 metres and a diameter of 5.6 metres.
