The Customer
Hilti is a world leader in professional tools and fastening systems for the construction industry. Among other things, the company develops diamond cutting and drilling systems for cutting and drilling in concrete, steel and stone. Hilti supplies professional users in more than 120 countries.
The Challenge
Hilti sought a partner to design and manufacture gantry saws to cut exceptionally large and complex parts with a diamond cable. Thanks to diamond, virtually any material can be cut through: concrete, steel and other hard or composite materials.
The machines are mainly used in the nuclear industry, for the controlled reduction of contaminated materials. No water cooling should be used in that environment, to avoid spreading contamination.

The solution
SMO designs and manufactures custom-made gantry saw machines for Hilti. The machines enable both horizontal and vertical cuts.
Each installation is specifically designed and can be equipped with various options: a rail system, a translation and rotation table, a cable magazine or an integrated working platform. Remote control is possible for safe and efficient operation. Depending on the application, various cooling methods can be used, including dry cooling with compressed air according to the Vortex principle.
Besides nuclear applications, the technology is also used for cutting through aircraft, rail cars, large tubular structures and other heavy industrial applications.
